Living in Cologne

With 13 colleges and universities and over 70,000 students, Cologne is one of the three largest student cities in Germany and offers a diverse range of recreational activities to meet everyone’s taste. Whether sports fan, night owl or culture vulture, there is something for everyone in Cologne.

Nightlife

Cologne has an enormous number of bars and clubs. No matter what type of music you like, or what type of people you like to hang out with, you are guaranteed to find like-minded people and the right location. House/electro, rock, hip hop, punk, metal or pop – there are clubs catering to every musical genre and every taste; if you want you can even dance to cheesy pop and carnival music the whole year round.

In addition to its club scene, Cologne is also well known for its rich offering of bars and bistros. In Zülpicher Straße in Kwartier Latäng, in Cologne’s student district, in the Belgian district or in Ehrenfeld, there is always something going on in the city’s bars and pubs every night of the week and at reasonable prices too.

Culture

Culture lovers are also not sold short here either. All year round, the city’s various concert halls such as the Philharmonic, the E-Werk, the Tanzbrunnen and, of course, the Lanxess-Arena with a capacity of 20,000, are full to bursting with international stars. Together with the Opera House, the Schauspielhaus and numerous smaller stages and theatres, several million visitors make their way to Cologne each year.

With a total of almost 30 museums, the reputation and significance of Cologne as a city of art or museums is more than justified. The most famous of Cologne’s museums include the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Museum Ludwig, the Romano-Germanic Museum and the Archaeological Zone. The Schokoladenmuseum (chocolate museum) in Rheinauhafen is also very popular.

Literature fans will also feel welcome in Cologne. Numerous publishers such as the famous DuMont Verlag are based in the media city. Not only that, one of the largest literature festivals in Europe, the Lit.Cologne, takes place over a period of eleven days each spring.

Sport and leisure activities

Cologne has many beautiful parks such as the Volksgarten, the Aachener Weiher and the Rheingarten where you can go with friends for a barbecue and to relax. There are also numerous typical German beer gardens where you can enjoy some Kölsch outside in good weather.

Anyone who enjoys sport has a range of options to choose from, either as something to do in their free time with friends, or as a regular member of a club. In addition to the classic sports such as football, basketball or volleyball, you can also play American football, drive a go-kart or go climbing (and much, much more).

And anyone who likes to watch others playing sport should certainly watch a game played by 1. FC Köln or an ice hockey game of the Kölner Haie in the Lanxess-Arena. A football game played by 1. FC Köln in the Rhein-Energie stadium is an absolute must. The atmosphere in the stadium and the passion of the FC fans is among the best in Europe.
